Humans are not automatically strategic

Most of the time, even smart and numerate people who claim goals do not automatically take the narrow set of actions that would effectively pursue them. Ineffective action is the default; there is no built-in force that routes behavior to the small slice of high-return options.

Why It Happens by Default

Most possible courses of action are extremely ineffective. Evolution and culture have not supplied strong guidance toward the rare patterns that actually optimize for stated goals. The situation resembles taking a calculus test at random: failure occurs because most answers are wrong and nothing steers you to the correct ones.

People do maintain weak, surface-level goal representations. They narrate goals to themselves and others, perform activities that feel consistent with the claimed goal, and register emotional reactions to outcomes. These representations do not automatically trigger effective search, testing, or focus.

The Non-Automatic Heuristics

Effective goal pursuit requires deliberate execution of behaviors that do not happen by default:

(a) Explicitly ask what you are trying to achieve.

(b) Define what success would look like and how progress can be tracked.

(c) Develop strong intrinsic curiosity about information that would help.

(d) Actively gather that information — by studying how others have succeeded at similar goals and by reviewing your own track record of strategies.

(e) Systematically generate and test many conjectures, including ones outside your current habits, while recording what works and what does not.

(f) Concentrate the majority of non-exploratory effort on the methods that the tests show are best.

(g) Verify that the goal is genuinely yours: that you want it coherently, free of unexamined fears or worth-it uncertainty, and that open questions have been resolved in advance rather than left to drain energy repeatedly.

(h) Shape your environment and social context to support continued motivation against frustration and present bias.

The Verbal–Automatic Gap

Abstract reasoning systems can grasp these heuristics once they are articulated. Motivational and reward systems that drive day-to-day behavior update far more slowly, if at all, without deliberate training. Conscious overrides are expensive and infrequent. The training steps themselves (reframing, repeated safe exposure, environmental design) are also not automatic.

  • Entering years of training "to make money" without first doing salary research.
  • Typing for hours daily yet never using a tutor program.
  • Repeating leisure patterns without checking which ones actually deliver enjoyment.
  • Worrying about rare risks while ignoring statistics on actual relative dangers.
  • Locking into a single study or work method without controlled experiments on alternatives.
