Skills Abstracting Upward
Every major wave of technology pushes human skill up one level of abstraction. The execution layer gets automated; humans move to the layer above — judgment, direction, curation, and taste. This pattern has repeated across every significant labor-displacing technology. What changes with each wave is the timescale.
The Historical Pattern
- Printing press: scribes who copied manuscripts became editors who decided what was worth printing and how to frame it
- Industrial weaving: hand-weavers became machine operators and quality supervisors
- Desktop publishing: typesetters became designers
In each case, the former skill did not disappear — it got embedded in a machine and the human role shifted upward to the decisions the machine could not make.
What AI Is Doing Now
The same shift is happening with AI, compressed dramatically in time. The printing press spread across Europe over decades. The Industrial Revolution unfolded over a century. AI is moving faster than both, and the compound interest of early adoption is already visible month-to-month.
What AI absorbs in the current wave: research, pattern-surfacing, drafting, code generation, data processing, formatting. What it does not absorb: the judgment of what deserves to exist, originality of thought, voice, taste, and the ability to make someone see something genuinely new.
As dan-koe puts it: "The difference between average and great is taste. When anyone can produce anything, choosing what deserves to exist becomes the skill."
The Execution Trap
The failure mode is treating AI as a way to avoid labor rather than as a way to expand capacity. Using AI to skip the hard parts of a task is different from using AI to do things you could not do before. The first move saves time. The second move raises the ceiling.
For meaning-based tasks — writing that changes beliefs, creative work that requires a genuine point of view, decisions that require judgment — the struggle is where the skill forms. Outsourcing the struggle outsources the growth.
What Moves Up
When execution abstracts away, the skills that remain scarce are:
- Judgment — deciding what's worth building, what's true, what matters
- Taste — the ability to evaluate quality without being told what good looks like
- Agency — acting without permission; deciding what to pursue
- Voice — a perspective distinct enough that it cannot be reproduced by averaging training data
- Rhetoric and framing — choosing how to present ideas so they land
These are not soft skills in the dismissive sense. They are the highest-value outputs of the layer that technology cannot yet touch.
