Superstructure

Superstructure refers to the macro-level conditions that determine which game is currently being played. Before analyzing why individuals behave a certain way, you need to establish the superstructure — the context that defines what moves are available, what rewards are on offer, and what the costs of different strategies are.

The term comes from Professor Jiang's game theory framework: demographics, economics, culture, politics, and religion considered together. Change the superstructure and the rational strategy changes completely, even for the same players.

Why superstructure matters

The same behavior can be rational in one superstructure and suicidal in another. Sleeping with many partners ensures child survival in a low-population, high-mortality society. It destroys social cohesion in a stable industrial one. Arranged marriage maximizes reproductive output when inter-group competition is high. It feels like oppression when population is stable and individual autonomy is the dominant cultural value.

Judging historical or cross-cultural behavior without establishing the superstructure produces confusion. The behavior isn't irrational — the analyst imported the wrong game.

Three historical archetypes

Each strategy is internally coherent given its superstructure. The primitive strategy would be catastrophic in a modern society. The modern dating game would be civilizationally fatal in a primitive one.

Superstructure as the analyst's first move

In game theory, identifying the superstructure comes before analyzing player behavior. The sequence:

  1. What are the actual macro conditions? (population, wealth, technology, competition)
  2. What game does this superstructure produce?
  3. What incentive does that game reward?
  4. What behavior follows from that incentive?

Skipping step 1 means you're analyzing the wrong game. This is why economic models that assume stable preferences often fail to predict behavior across cultures or historical periods — they assume the same superstructure everywhere.

Superstructure changes slowly, then suddenly

Superstructures shift on generational timescales. Technology (germ theory, contraception, digital communication) can change conditions faster than culture adapts. The result is behavioral lag — people are playing a new game with the instincts of an old one, or vice versa.

The modern fertility crisis is partly this: biology still drives some reproductive instinct, but the superstructure has shifted to a status game where children are costly rather than beneficial. The lag between superstructure change and cultural/behavioral adaptation is where civilizational stress appears.
