Richard Feynman

Richard Feynman (1918–1988) was an American theoretical physicist, Nobel laureate (1965), and the most celebrated physics communicator of the twentieth century. He spent most of his career at Caltech, where he contributed foundational work in quantum electrodynamics (QED) — the quantum theory of how light and matter interact — and developed a powerful diagrammatic notation (Feynman diagrams) that became standard across particle physics.

His influence extends well beyond research. Feynman had an unusually developed instinct for where the truth actually lives in any explanation — what the honest picture looks like, stripped of false precision, versus what gets dressed up to look more complete than it is. This made him a dangerous critic and an extraordinary teacher.

The Feynman Lectures on Physics (1963, co-authored with Leighton and Sands) grew out of a two-year introductory course he taught at Caltech in 1961–63. He approached it as an experiment: what if you taught physics to beginners by telling them what physicists actually understand — including the mysteries — rather than a sanitized preview? The lectures are three volumes; Six Easy Pieces extracts the six most accessible chapters.

His intellectual style is defined by a few recognizable habits:

  • Start from what we actually know, not from what sounds right
  • Name what we don't understand as clearly as what we do
  • Prefer analogies that illuminate the mechanism over analogies that just sound impressive
  • Treat experiment as the sole judge of truth, not authority or elegance

Feynman was also involved in the Manhattan Project, the investigation of the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster (where he demonstrated the O-ring failure by dunking a piece of rubber in ice water at the press conference), and wrote several widely read memoirs (Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman!; What Do You Know?).
