Game theory is the mathematical study of strategic decision-making where outcomes depend on others' choices. Most real-world interactions are non-cooperative — individuals act in self-interest — but they are also iterated: they repeat over time, with consequences carrying forward.

In a one-off interaction (like a game show split-or-steal), defecting is the dominant strategy — you do better or equal regardless of what the opponent does. But life is not a game show. Almost every meaningful interaction repeats, and reputations compound.

Axelrod's Tournament

In 1980, political scientist Robert Axelrod ran a computer tournament of iterated prisoner's dilemma strategies. Academics from multiple fields submitted programs; each played every other program across 200-round games. The winner, repeated consistently across multiple tournament reruns, was tit-for-tat — one of the simplest programs submitted.

Tit-for-tat:

  1. Always starts by cooperating
  2. On every subsequent round, copies the opponent's last move
  3. When the opponent cooperates again after defecting, immediately forgives and returns to cooperation

It never wins any individual game — it can only draw or lose one-on-one. But across all matchups, it accumulated the highest total score because it cooperated with enough other players consistently.

Axelrod's analysis of what made it work: nice (never first to defect), retaliatory (doesn't let defection go unanswered), forgiving (doesn't hold grudges beyond the immediate response), clear (the opponent can always predict it, enabling long-term trust).

In later simulations with more chaotic conditions, a more generous tit-for-tat — one that occasionally forgave defections without retaliating — proved even more effective.
